Power failure hits thousands in Rotterdam region

Some 50,000 households in Vlaardingen, Schiedam and northwest Rotterdam were without power on Monday afternoon, probably because of a fault at an electricity sub station, local broadcaster RTV Rijnmond said.

Rotterdam airport has switched to emergency generators so flights are unaffected.

It is unclear how long the break-down is likely to last.
