Joran van der Sloot sentenced to 28 years in jail for murder

Joran van der Sloot has been sentenced to 28 years in jail for killing a young Peruvian woman nearly two years ago.

Van der Sloot, 24, pleaded guilty to murdering Stephany Flores, whom he met in a casino in Lima in May 2010.
The Dutchman has been in the public eye since he was suspected of involvement in the disappearance of American teenager Natalee Holloway on the Caribbean island of Aruba in May 2005. Van der Sloot grew up on the island, where his father was a judge.
Suspect
Van der Sloot’s lawyer had argued that his client killed Flores as a result of ‘extreme psychological trauma’ following the Holloway disappearance. The US student was legally declared dead on Thursday.
Flores was killed five years to the day after Holloway disappeared. Van der Sloot, who was 17 at the time, was twice detained in Aruba as a suspect in the Holloway disappearance but was never charged.
Van der Sloot was also fined 200,000 soles (€58,000) and will deported on his release from jail in 2038. He faces charges in the US for extorting $25,000 from Holloway’s grieving mother Beth Holloway in exchange for information about the location of Natalee’s body.
