Groningen is first with natural ice races
The first marathon of the season on natural ice takes place on Tuesday evening in Noordlaren in Groningen. There will be three races, including one for veteran skaters.
National skaters are not allowed to take part in order to protect the quality of skaters in the races scheduled for Weissensee in Austria, the skating union says. The Open Dutch championship will be held there on Wednesday and the alternative Elfstedentocht on Saturday.
