Get out the skates: icy weather on its way with heavy frosts at night

After unseasonally warm weather in December and January, the weather is about to get very cold with temperatures of up to minus 16 Celsius at night, say weather forecasters.

The cold snap is set to start on Saturday night, brought by an easterly wind. There may be some snow on Monday night but after that, the weather will turn clear and very cold. By the end of the week, the temperature will dip to between minus 10 and minus 16 Celsius at night, and it will remain as low as minus 7 during the day.

Skating

In Friesland, pumping stations have already been stopped to allow the water time to settle and encourage ice formation.
The Telegraaf says by next weekend, there should be an ice layer of up to 10cm on open water, clearing the way for outdoor skating.
Television weathermen are united in their belief that a long period of frost is on its way, the Telegraaf said. ‘I’m getting my skates sharpened,’ one told the paper.
No end in sight
The heavy frost is set to continue for at least the next 10 days. According to the KNMI weather bureau, there is a 90% chance the frost will continue up to February 11.
The wintry weather is caused by a high pressure zone stretching from the Azores to Siberia.
