What crisis? Supermarkets expect Christmas sales record

Supermarkets are expecting their turnover in the week before Christmas to reach over €800m, well above last year’s holiday spending total.

In an average week, we spend some €630m in supermarkets, the retail association CBL said on Monday.
Other evidence that consumers are determined to enjoy this year’s winter season is the popularity of foreign trips and holidays at home.
Some 750,000 people are expected to go away over the Christmas break, unchanged on last year. However, holidays at home are slightly up on last year, at the expense of foreign destinations.
Germany is the most popular place for a Christmas break, followed by Belgium and Austria.
