Tuigdorp is Van Dale’s word of the year

After wildbreien (graffiti knitting) and weigerambtenaar (refusenik registrar), tuigdorp (scum village) has become the third word to win a 2011 word of the year competition.

Tuigdorp – used by PVV leader Geert Wilders in February to suggest a place for persistent offenders – took 43% of the vote in an online poll organised by the Van Dale dictionary group.
Second in the Van Dale poll was caviapolitie – guinea pig police, a nickname for the new animal cops – and occupyer, after the protest movement.
Wildbreien won the award from the Dutch lexicology institute’s website while weigerambtenaar was the favourite of the members of the Onze Taal society.
