Stop and search policy pays off in Amsterdam; no guns this year

Amsterdam police did not find any firearms during mass stop and search procedures this year, website nu.nl reports.

It is the first time since the controls began that no guns have been found.
This year police staged 18 large stop and search operations in parts of the city which have been designated high risk areas. In total, 8,261 people were searched. The weapons haul included 97 knives, six tear gas canisters and a taser.
According to nu.nl, mass stop and search operations have been banned by the European Court of Human Rights, so they can only be carried out in areas considered to be high risk.
