PostNL wants to limit pension outgoings

Postal delivery company PostNL is in talks with the company’s pension scheme on limiting expenditure, news agency ANP reports on Monday.

The company says the cost of the pension scheme is set to rise by hundreds of millions a year because of the decline in its coverage ratio – now around 96%. This means the pension scheme is short of some €500m to pay its pensions.
Under current rules, that deficit must be pulled back within three years – but the company argues this will be difficult given the pressure its delivery operations are under.
PostNL points out, for example, that most of its staff do not pay pension contributions and that it pays a contribution based on 35% of salary, whereas most employers pay between 20% and 25%.
