Italian rubbish sent to the Netherlands for processing

The Italian city of Naples has been given the green light to ship 200,000 tonnes of domestic rubbish to the Netherlands to be burned in two Dutch waste incinerators, Nos television reports.

Junior environment minister Joop Atsma has granted a permit for the shipments, which will be closely monitored by ministry inspectors.
Atsma says the Neapolitan waste will account for just 3% of total waste incineration in the Netherlands. The heat generated will be used to warm homes and generate electricity, he said.
