Fireworks ban ‘unavoidable’

A fireworks ban for the public will be unavoidable in years to come, according to the man in charge of coordinating the campaign against illegal fireworks in Monday’s Trouw.

Cees Meijer says the size and power of fireworks is increasing every year, leading to a corresponding rise in damage to buildings and people.
‘If anti-social elements go on like this, making and setting off dangerous bombs, there is no other option,’ he said. ‘It is getting out of hand.’
Seizures
Last year, police seized 80,000 kilos of fireworks in the run up to the New Year celebrations.
The Netherlands has strict laws relating to the sale of fireworks. They may only be sold to the public from licensed locations during a few days prior to December 31.
At least two teenagers were killed in firework-related accidents during the last New Year festivities.
