Fireworks ban 'unavoidable'Monday 19 December 2011 A fireworks ban for the public will be unavoidable in years to come, according to the man in charge of coordinating the campaign against illegal fireworks in Monday's Trouw. Cees Meijer says the size and power of fireworks is increasing every year, leading to a corresponding rise in damage to buildings and people. 'If anti-social elements go on like this, making and setting off dangerous bombs, there is no other option,' he said. 'It is getting out of hand.' Seizures Last year, police seized 80,000 kilos of fireworks in the run up to the New Year celebrations. The Netherlands has strict laws relating to the sale of fireworks. They may only be sold to the public from licensed locations during a few days prior to December 31. That would be a relief, although a city-sponsored "official" show would be ideal. At the very least, can it not be limited to a 2-hour window between 11 pm and 1 am? Do we HAVE to be subjected to it for 24 hours straight and on busy streets? By CW | December 19, 2011 11:17 AM Peace and quiet at last, finally! By Fred | December 19, 2011 12:11 PM Never thought that perhaps Dutch people are crazy about fireworks precisely because they can have them only 1 month per year? By joanna | December 19, 2011 1:53 PM The private fireworks shows were fun - when there were fewer people here, and less violence. Things have changed now though, I'd be glad to see the private sale and possesion of fireworks banned. By Bill | December 19, 2011 2:48 PM What a pity. The nanny state removes the fireworks because the public don't know how to use them. Legalise them, make them available year round and the problem will disappear. The misuse of fireworks stems directly from the restrictions, hence everyone stocks up with as much as they can get, and then have to use them all up in 24 hours. A nanny state created problem. By jaycee | December 19, 2011 6:39 PM What worries me more is how they're stored and if my neighbor is stockpiling combustibles in his flat. I don't want my house blown up, too. By J. | December 20, 2011 10:41 AM Seems some Dutch people forgot the Enschede fireworks disaster - the catastrophic fireworks explosion at the SE Fireworks depot on 13 May 2000. Like they say 'history will always repeat itself' due to some ignorant people who still want to legalize everything. Einstein said it best: 'Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.' By Diana | December 20, 2011 1:58 PM I hear fireworks for a couple weeks now and nothing is done about it. I say let the jerks blow themselves up while we hide inside. Get rid of the stupid before they procreate. By LJK | December 27, 2011 2:20 PM Nothing against fireworks it is the idiots that throw them at you, cars and houses that I have issues with. They need to be banned for life! By Andy | December 27, 2011 4:39 PM
