Farming incomes fall sharply

Agrarian farmers, flower bulb growers, greenhouse growers and egg producers saw a sharp drop in income this year, but dairy farmers earned more, according to new figures from the agricultural economic institute LEI.

Costs were up by an average 7% but sales prices rose by just 2%, leading to an income plunge for many farmers, LEI said.
In particular, potato and onion farmers were hard hit, with average income per farm falling from €124,000 in 2010 to €56,000 last year.
