Supermarket chain Jumbo buys C1000 stores (update)

Supermarket group Jumbo is buying 450 C1000 supermarkets from British investment group CVC, creating a new chain of 725 stores and a strong rival to Ahold’s Albert Heijn.

Jumbo is said to have bid over €900m for the chain which gives it 23% of the Dutch market and annual sales of €7.5bn. Albert Heijn has some 33% of the Dutch market.
‘This is a unique chance for our family firm to realise our growth ambitions,’ CEO Frits van Eerd said in a statement.
The deal is expected to be finalised in the first quarter of next year. The competition authority NMa must also give its opinion.
Jumbo is still in the process of re-branding Super de Boer supermarkets, which it bought in 2009.
