Johan Cruijff threatens to quit Ajax following row over Van Gaal

Johan Cruijff says he will leave Ajax if members do not back him in the escalating row over the appointment of Louis van Gaal as general director, according to media reports on Friday.

Cruijff was surprised earlier this week by the announcement that Van Gaal is to return to the club. The decision was taken by the four other members of the supervisory board, without consulting Cruijff. The two men are known not to get on.
According to the Telegraaf, the four board members have been summoned to explain events to a meeting of the members’ council on Sunday.
The council wants to know how the board came reached its decision to appoint Van Gaal without involving Cruijff, and if there is a breach of trust between the members’ council and the supervisory board.
Players
The former international sees the dispute as one between players and non-players. ‘There is a lot of knowledge at Ajax and others want to change all that. The club has to say what it thinks. We either get on with it, or we leave,’ he is quoted as saying.
Cruijff returned to the Amsterdam club as a member of the technical advisory committee earlier this year, after becoming highly critical of its performance and launching a high-profile campaign to force through improvements.
Meanwhile, supervisory board member Paul Romer told television talk show Pauw & Witteman that Van Gaal will sign for between three and five years. ‘The club needs stability,’ Romer said.
