Elderly woman who killed Down Syndrome daughter spared jail

An 85-year-old Amsterdam woman who cut the throat of her 47-year-old Down Syndrome daughter has been found guilty of murder but will not go to jail.

This is in line with the public prosecution department‘s recommendations.
The woman, who had memory loss and may have been suffering from early Alzheimer, killed her daughter after caring for her alone for 35 years and then tried to commit suicide.
According to court documents, she was worried the younger woman would be put into an institution, a misconception which may have been caused by her illness. The daughter had been abused when she lived in a home as a young girl.
