Detectives back new probe into Enschede fireworks disaster

Detectives still looking into the Enschede firework disaster of 11 years ago think there should be a new formal investigation to find the cause of the explosion which killed 23 and destroyed hundreds of homes, current affairs show KRO Brandpunt reports.

The statements were found on secret recordings obtained by the show. Detectives also found statements made by firemen which never formed part of the official evidence.
The public prosecution department ordered a second look at the evidence in 2010 after a new witness stated a worker from the firework storage depot which blew up was on the premises before the blast.
The exact cause of the explosion, which ripped through a residential area in May 2000, has always remained a mystery.
