A host of new champions at the Dutch speed skating championships

Bob de Jong held on to his 10,000 metres national title at the Dutch speed skating champions in Heerenveen at the weekend.


De Jong, in ‘aggressive form’ according to the Volkskrant, took the title in 12.57.29, a new championship record.
Jorrit Bergsma, who took the 5,000 metre title earlier, was second and Sven Kramer, returning to competition after injury, was third.
On Saturday, Thijsje Oenema became the surprise winner of the women’s 500 and 1,000 metre events. ‘I had not expected this at all,’ the Friesan skater told reporters afterwards.
Teenager Pien Keulstra, who turned 18 on Sunday, took the women’s 3,000 and 5,000 metres.
Men’s event:

Stefan Groothuis – 1,000 metres
Stefan Groothuis – 1,500 metres
