Torture risk ‘very small’ says army chief

There is only a ‘very small’ risk that Dutch soldiers and police officers in Afghanistan would have any involvement in the torture of prisoners, army chief Peter van Uhm said on Thursday.

Van Uhm was responding to a United Nations report which says torture has been used in a number of prisons throughout the country.
The Dutch are involved in a police training mission in the northern province of Kunduz.
‘We are not the people who take prisoners,’ Van Uhm said, adding that Dutch trainers will make sure Afghan officers use the correct methods to make arrests.
The Netherlands has already said that local police officers who were involved in torture should be prosecuted.
