Tamils jailed for criminal activities, not guilty of terrorist offences

Five Tamils have been jailed for between two and six years by a court in The Hague for membership of a criminal organisation but were found not guilty of being members of a terrorist organisation, Nos television reported on Friday.

The court said it had been proved the men were guilty of money laundering and running illegal lotteries to raise money for the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka.
They also used front organisations to try to get local authority funding for projects and events, but the money was actually destined for the terrorist group, the NRC said in its report.
In total, some €130m is said to have been raised in the Netherlands, Nos said.
The EU put the Tamil Tigers on its official list of terrorist organisations in 2006.
