Justice ministry hunts 6,500 refuseniks who have not gone to jail

The justice ministry is intensifying efforts to track down over 6,500 people who have been given a jail sentence but have not yet spent any time behind bars, the Telegraaf reports on Wednesday.

In the Dutch legal system, suspects are not required to turn up in court and so cannot be locked up immediately they are found guilty. Others are given a later date to report to prison because of cell shortages.
Junior justice minister Fred Teeven is due to send a briefing to MPs about the campaign later on Wednesday.
