Cows are disappearing from the countryside

The number of cows in Dutch fields has fallen by 60% in the past 25 years, according to research by CLM Research & Advice.

In 1985 there were 2.3 million cows out in the fields. Now the number is under 1.1 million, says CLM.
The main reasons are the shrinking of the national herd and the fact that 26% of cows are kept permanently indoors. In 1985 this was just 5%.
