Uruzgan mission was effective: report

The Dutch contribution to the Nato mission in Afghanistan did produce lasting benefits, according to a cabinet report.

The Netherlands’ peacekeeping and rebuilding efforts were focused on the southern province of Uruzgan between 2006 and 2010.
The report states that the security situation in Uruzgan has improved, that the economy is starting to develop and local government has begun to perform better.
Education
In addition, many children are now receiving better education, health services have improved and the province is more easily accessible by both road and air.
The Dutch efforts have created a ‘solid basis’ for the American and Australians who have replaced them and for the local Afghan authorities, the report said.
There were some 1,800 Dutch soldiers and officials at any one time during the mission. In total, 140 were injured, 41 seriously, and 24 were killed.
The Dutch were widely praised for their approach to the Afghan mission, in particular for their people-orientated strategy and focus on building trust between troops and locals.
