Slavery game trailer is television show advert

An online advert for a new video game inviting players to make a ‘tremendous fortune’ from the slave trade is actually a trailer for a Dutch television documentary series, it emerged this week.

The teaser for Slavery: The Game offers players the chance to buy and sell humans, and punish them using a variety of weapons.
The trailer was quickly picked up online, and the game condemned for being offensive and in bad taste.
But now the makers have come clean, admitting the aim is to boost interest in the tv programme, which looks at the Dutch role in the slave trade.
‘It was by no means our intention to hurt people with the trailer. We chose this approach to create maximum awareness for slavery in general. Not just for the history of slavery, but also for slavery that still exists today’, said Carla Boos, editor in chief of public broadcaster NTR, in a statement.
