Minister to get tough on immigrants

Immigration minister Gerd Leers is introducing draft legislation to parliament on Friday to toughen up immigration and asylum law.

The minister is planning to make it easier and quicker to deport immigrants who break the law, with those committing serious crimes being deported no matter how long they have lived in the Netherlands, reports news agency ANP.
Leers also wants to tighten up the rules on family reunions, with only partners and under-age children being allowed in and not grandparents or other more distant relatives.
There will be a year’s waiting time before people can join their partners in the Netherlands and ‘import brides’ will only receive independent residence status after they have live here for five years.
