Investigation into meat-eaters research widens

Radboud University in Nijmegen has begun its own investigation into an academic scandal which resulted in a Tilburg professor being suspended last week, the Telegraaf reports on Sunday.

Radboud’s academic integrity committee is looking into the role of one of its professors – Roos Vonk – in the ‘meat eaters are egotistical’ affair.
Vonk, one of the three academics involved in the research, has already apologised for her involvement in the scandal, but the university’s rector has called for a thorough investigation.
Fake data
Tilburg professor of social and behavioural sciences Diederik Stapel was suspended on Wednesday after it emerged he had used ficticious data in his publications.
The research on meat eaters, which concluded meat made them anti-social and selfish, was called into question after Vonk sent out a press release on the findings before they had been published in a scientific journal and subjected to peer review.
Earlier research by Stapel, a frequent guest on television chat shows, found that a messy room makes people aggressive and beautiful people have better chances in life.
A special committee is now looking into the Stapel’s other research to see if other conclusions hold up.
