Health watchdog sanctions private doctor home visits

The healthservice watchdog NZa has agreed sanction home visits to patients by a private doctors’ organisation, the Financieele Dagblad reports on Wednesday.

SOS-arts, based on the French organisation SOS-Medecins, wants to offer an alternative to home visits by family doctors. In practice, Dutch GPs are rarely prepared to make home visits.
In France, people can call on an SOS-Medecins doctor 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The organisation has being trying to start up in the Netherlands for four years, the paper says.
The NZa has also agreed that doctors who make home visits on behalf of SOS-arts do not need to have gone through formal training to be a GP.
Unlike home visits by a traditional family doctor, SOS-arts services will not be covered by the basic insurance package.
