Germany, Finland support Dutch euro commissioner plan: finance minister

Germany and Finland support the Netherlands’ suggestion that a new EU commissioner be appointed to monitor whether eurozone countries are keeping to strict monetary union rules, finance minister Jan Kees de Jager is quoted as saying on Thursday.

Speaking at the presentation of a report on the Dutch economy in 2010, De Jager said he hoped that with German support it would be possible to convince France of the merits of the idea, news agency Reuters reported.
‘The position of Germany is very close to the Dutch one. We are trying to take a joint position with these countries, in particular to involve France,’ Reuters quoted the minister as saying.
De Jager discussed the plan with his German and Finnish colleagues on Tuesday. The Dutch proposals would also involve tough sanctions on countries which broke the rules, including eventual expulsion.
The European Commission on Thursday said current EU treaties did not allow countries, such as Greece, to be put out of the eurozone. At the moment it is of primary concern that measures agreed to combat the debt crisis be put into practice, he said.
