Shell accepts responsibility for two Nigerian oil spills

Anglo-Dutch oil giant Shell has accepted responsibility for two massive oil spills in the Niger Delta in 2008 and will pay compensation, the company has agreed.

According to the Financial Times, Shell could potentially pay more than £250m after admitting liability for spills, following a legal claim brought in Britain.
Shell’s Nigerian joint venture SPDC ‘will pay compensation in accordance with Nigerian law,’ the Shell statement said. ‘The legal process is continuing and will take several months to reach a conclusion.’
The claim has been brought on behalf of 69,000 people, most of whom are fishermen who lost their livelihoods because of the spills.
