MPs want government to act on middle income housing crisis

A majority of MPs wants home affairs minister Piet Hein Donner to make sure people on average incomes can still qualify for a rent controlled house, the Telegraaf reports on Tuesday.

Under EU rules, housing corporations are only allowed to reserve 10% of their rent-controlled housing stock for people earning more than €33,614 a year. This means most households which break the barrier will have to pay at least €652 a month for a home.
The Brussels restriction stems from laws on state support and the tax breaks given to housing corporations.
The Netherlands has some 400 housing corporations which rent out, maintain and manage 2.4 million homes – around one third of the national housing stock. Most of them are rent-controlled.
Last week, the housing corporation umbrella group Aedes warned that thousands of people are being turned away from the rent-controlled sector.
