One dead, two seriously injured in Twente football stadium collapse

One person has been killed and at least two seriously injured when part of football club FC Twente’s stadium collapsed during building work, news agency ANP reports.

The accident happened at around lunch time on Thursday. A number of other people have been taken to hospital. It is not yet clear what the extent of their injuries is, but air ambulances were also involved in taking them to hospital.
The stadium is currently being expanded with an extra seating ring, which will take its capacity to 30,000. Initial reports say it appears several support beams collapsed at one end of the stadium, sending part of the tribune crashing down.
One eyewitness said several people were on the roof of the stadium when it began to sway and collapse. Another said it went down ‘like a pack of cards’.
‘At first it was if a big storm was on its way and then everything started to shake. We thought it was an earthquake,’ another eyewitness told local television.
Sniffer dogs have been searching for other victims hidden under the rubble, according to Nos news.
