Labour inspectors up checks on market gardeners

Social affairs ministry inspectors are to increase their checks on market gardeners this summer to make sure they are not employing people without work permits as seasonal workers.

The news follows the government’s decision to require growers to use unemployed Dutch people to pick fruit and vegetables, rather than bring in people from Bulgaria and Romania.
The new measure, hotly contested by growers themselves, came into effect on July 1.
