Hoofddorp fire deaths, family protests at murder suicide claim

The mayor of Haarlemermeer was speaking out of turn and before all the facts are known when he said the death of a family of five in a fire in Hoofddorp earlier this week appeared to be a murder suicide, according to surviving family members.

‘The police have assured us this conclusion can absolutely not be drawn,’ nephew Rezgar Kabir says in the Telegraaf. ‘By spreading the wrong information, he has led to wild speculation and stories in the media. This is very painful for the relatives.’
The public prosecution department has also distanced itself from the mayor’s comments, saying such conclusions cannot be drawn after 1.5 days of investigation.
The family – a man of Iraqi origin, a Russian woman and three children aged 7, 9 and 11 – all died in the fire at their home.
