Company doctors under pressure

One in five company doctors say they cannot do their job properly because of outside pressure from employers and private health and safety specialists, Trouw reports on Tuesday, quoting social affairs ministry figures.

Some are even pressured to make confidential medical information available to employers, the survey shows. This is particularly the case when health is an issue in a labour conflict.
‘In these situations, employers have even threatened to have the company doctor replaced,’ the researchers told the paper.
Of the 591 company doctors who took part in the survey, 42% said they had been asked for medical information and 22% reported this happened often. Not only employers, but health insurers and unemployment benefit officials ask for medical details.
