Chemical plant boss faces reckless behaviour charges

The head of chemicals packaging firm Chemie-Pack has again been arrested in connection with January’s serious fire at the plant – this time on suspicion of starting the fire by reckless behaviour.

The director and three other men were first picked up early last week on charges relating to the deliberate storage and processing of large amounts of dangerous chemicals without proper environmental licences.
Nor were proper safety measures in place, the public prosecution department said. Three of the four, who were released at the end of the week, were re-arrested on Sunday.
The massive fire on January 5 caused chaos in Moerdijk, south of Rotterdam, and its surrounding areas and led to millions of euros worth of vegetables being destroyed.
Three men will appear in court on Wednesday.
