Public transport strike in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague

There will be no public transport in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague from 09.00 hours on Wednesday as bus, tram and metro workers go on strike in protest at government cuts.

Services will resume from around 15.00 this afternoon, transport companies say.
Public transport workers are angry at government plans to force the three big cities to put public transport services out to private competition. They say jobs and services will be cut if the government goes ahead.
They are also angry about government spending cuts on public transport services. In total, transport minister Melanie Schultz van Haegen is slicing €120m off public transport spending – the amount she says the three cities would save if they put bus and tram services out to tender.
Left-wing opposition parties have drawn up draft legislation which would allow the three cities to decide themselves whether or not to effectively privatise public transport. All three city councils want to keep public transport in their own hands.
