‘India won’t extradite central bank safe cracker’

India has refused to extradite one of its nationals wanted in connection with the theft of €1.25m from a safe at the Dutch central bank, the AD reports on Thursday.

The man, known as Sanjay D, is alleged to have made off with the cash some time before September 2008 when the theft was discovered. By then, he had already left the country.
India, which has an extradition treaty with the Netherlands, has not made a ‘positive reply’ to the 2010 request, a public prosecution department spokesman told the paper.. The treaty does not require India to extradite its own nationals.
The central bank sent out a short statement on the crime at the weekend. D is due to go on trial in absentia on July 8. In the statement, the bank said it deeply regretted the incident, and that security measures had been stepped up.
The AD reported earlier that D is living ‘a life of luxury’ in New Delhi.
