Extra cash, selection for universities with speedy students

Junior education minister Halbe Zijlstra plans to give universities which meet targets on successful students more money, Trouw reports on Thursday, quoting confidential documents.

The paper says universities which reduce the drop out rate, and give students more lectures with better teachers will be able to claim extra funding.
From 2016, extra cash totalling €200m will be divided up between universities which have met these agreed targets.

In return, universities are to be given greater freedom to select students. At the moment, most automatically get a place. Universities will also be free to charge higher fees for ‘particularly good’ courses.
Zijlstra also plans to broaden the scope of the current bachelor’s degree system so that students only specialise during the master’s phase.
The definitive plans will be presented to the cabinet at the end of the month. Trouw says universities are broadly in agreement with the proposals.
