Antibiotic-resistant bacteria kills 21

The Dutch health institute RIVM is looking into the deaths of 21 patients in the Maasstad hospital in Rotterdam who were infected with a virulent form of the antibiotic-resistant Klebsiella bacteria. The cause of the outbreak is not yet known.

The hospital is testing patients and has found 47 carriers of the Oxa48-producing form of the Klebsiella bacteria. Currently eight carriers are still in hospital and are being treated in an isolation ward, reports Trouw.
All patients are being tested for the bacteria when they enter hospital and when they leave.
