Afsluitdijk needs major overhaul

The Afsluitsdijk, the 32km sea dyke which links Den Oever in Noord Holland to the province of Friesland, needs major renovation work, a government committee said on Wednesday.

The dyke, built over 75 years ago, separates the Zuiderzee, a salt water inlet of the North Sea from the fresh water IJsselmeer lake.
In particular, the grass top to the dyke needs replacing by asphalt, the committee says.
