Throw Greece out of euro: former minister

Greece should immediately be thrown out of the euro zone and reintroduce the drachma, writes Willem Vermeend, former finance and social affairs minister for the Labour party, in a column on the Telegraaf website.

Vermeend says Greece can remain an EU member but should give up the euro.
He criticises Mark Rutte’s government for trying to save ‘the bankrupt country’. The cuts, tax rises and sale of state assets will not help, he says.
Vermeend, professor of fiscal law at Maastricht university, also criticises the banks, which are owed €140bn by Greece and want to keep the country in the euro zone for their own advantage.
Greece should be encouraged to leave the euro with a ‘dowry’ of a combination of debt cancellation and low interest rates on the rest, he says.
