Nuon postpones construction of new coal-fired power plant

Energy concern Nuon announced on Thursday that it has postponed the construction of its coal-fired power plant in the Eemshaven in Groningen for the time being.

In return, environmental organisations that have been fighting a battle against the plant for several years have agreed to drop all legal proceedings. They had already had two environmental licences revoked.
Nuon’s decision was made following recent discussions on CO2 capture and storage, for which there is as yet little acceptance.
The company says it will not build coal-fired power plants without this facility and it does not expect its coal-fired power plant to come on stream until 2020 at the earliest.
The construction of its gas-fired power plant will continue and should be in use at the end of 2012.
