Provinces can now get down to business: forming new coalitions

As the dust settles on Wednesday’s elections, party leaders in the 12 provinces will now get down to work on forming coalitions to run their regional affairs for the next four years.

The main winner in the provincial vote, the anti-Islam PVV, is now the biggest party in Limburg and will take the lead in the formation process even though it and the CDA both have 10 seats.
However, it is unlikely the PVV will be able to form a working coalition. The CDA has already said it will not take part if the anti-Islam party refuses to back down on its wish to ban the building of new mosques.
Nationwide, the CDA’s vote almost halved compared with four years ago. The party remains in control in Overijssel but has lost its role as the biggest party in Gelderland, Flevoland, Utrecht, Zuid-Holland, Zeeland and Noord-Brabant to the VVD.
The VVD remains the biggest party in Noord-Holland while the PvdA keeps its control over the northern provinces in Friesland, Groningen and Drenthe.
