Animal party complains about goose pulling

Animal party PvdD on Tuesday lodged a complaint with the safety body VWA against a popular local tradition known as ‘goose pulling’ that takes place each Tuesday before the start of Lent in the Limburg village of Grevenbicht.

The PvdA says the practice is animal cruelty, reports Trouw.
Goose pulling was a popular blood sport in the 17th and 18th centuries in the Netherlands and England. A live goose was fastened to a pole across a road. A man on horseback rode at full gallop and tried to grab the bird by the neck and pull off its head.
Limburg is the only place that still allows goose pulling, but these days they use a dead bird.
