Speed does not pollute

Raising the speed limit on motorways will have virtually no effect on air quality, according to tests carried out for the government.

Infrastructure minister Melanie Schultz van Haegen wants to raise speed limits where possible, and trials are already taking place on the A12 between The Hague and Voorburg. Along this section of the motorway, the maximum speed limit has been raised from 80kph to 100kph during the evening and night and this has not led to more air pollution, according to the Volkskrant.
Schultz van Haegen has already announced a speed increase on the A20 in Rotterdam and wants a third of motorways to have a maximum speed limit of 130kph in the near future.
