Nuclear power applications not before end 2012: minister

Economic affairs minister Maxime Verhagen expects it will be the end of 2012 before he receives a formal application to build one or two more nuclear power stations in the country, news agency ANP reports.

‘If there is such a request, I will make sure we have enough capacity [to process it] because I want to grant a licence during this cabinet period,’ Verhagen said during a debate on energy policy on Tuesday.
No government money would be invested in building nuclear power stations but the cabinet will put money into looking into the best way of disposing of nuclear waste.
Two initiatives are currently under way. The former shareholders of energy company Essent – a number of local and provincial councils – said in September 2010 they are starting procedures to build a new plant. Essent is now owned by RWE.
Power firm Delta has similar plans to build a second nuclear power station. Those plans were announced in 2009.
