MPs oppose Connexxion Veolia merger

A majority of MPs has called on the government to do all it can to stave off the merger between two French transport companies: Veolia Transport and Transdev.

The merger means two Dutch regional transport groups – Connexxion and Veolia Transport – will also merge, giving them a 70% share of the market, the Volkskrant reports.
Transport minister Melanie Schultz van Haegen has already said she does not believe there are any reasons to oppose the merger and the competition authority NMa has also given the green light.
Socialist party MP Farshad Bashir said the move showed that problems with the liberalised public transport market were getting out of hand. ‘There is only one thing worse for the SP than market forces in public transport and that is a monopoly holder within that market,’ Bashir was quoted as saying.
