Government on target to miss senate majority

The latest Synovate poll on the likely provincial election results shows the current coalition government falling three seats short of a majority in the senate.

The cabinet – made up of the VVD and CDA – together with alliance partner PVV are hoping to win most seats in the March 2 vote to be able to ease the process of controversial legislation.
The provincial election results are used to determine the make-up of the upper house of parliament.
The poll says the VVD will win 14 seats, anti-Islam PVV 12 and Christian Democrats nine – giving them a total 35 seats in the 75 seat upper house.
The previous Synovate poll did give the coalition a majority. The CDA is currently the biggest party in the upper house with 21 seats.
The Synovate poll gives Labour 13 seats, making it the second biggest party.
An online poll by Maurice de Hond does give a slim majority to the current coalition alliance and puts Labour in third place.
