Consumer association pressures banks on mortgage rates

The consumers association Consumentenbond has launched a campaign to try to get banks to lower their mortgage interest rates.

‘Mortgage interest rates have been an average of one percentage point too high for the past two years. This is costing consumers thousands of euros a year,’ said the association.
It has set up an online petition on its website and says if banks don’t act, it is time for politicians to get involved.

Cheaper borrowing

Banks are failing to pass on the benefits of cheaper borrowing to consumers, the association’s director Bart CombĂ©e says in the Telegraaf. ‘The lack of competition is allowing banks to fix unreasonable fees,’ he said.
The Dutch competition authority is currently investigating the mortgage market in the Netherlands.
