Banks refuse to give mortgages to homes on private ground

Some 125,000 houses in the Netherlands are threatened with becoming unsaleable because banks are refusing to give mortgages on property standing on land owned by someone else, according to television current affairs show EenVandaag.

This means it is almost impossible for the owners of houses on ground owned by private individuals and housing corporations which are liable for particulier erfpacht (ground rent) to sell them.
Home owners lobby group VEH has been in talks with the banks for some time in an effort to force through changes but to no avail. It says it has no idea why the banks have taken this stand.
The banks say such mortgages are too risky, the show said.
