Abuse victims want to sue retired cardinal

Several victims of sexual abuse at the hands of the Dutch Catholic church want to take the former head of the church to court for failing to protect them, the AD reported at the weekend.

Cardinal Ad Simonis admitted helping a paedofile priest find a new job despite his convictions for abuse. The priest went on to abuse several children at his new posting in Amersfoort.
The cardinal said in a statement on Friday the church was aware of the priest’s history and had sent him for psychological assessment and therapy before reassigning him to the church in Amersfoort.
Some 2,000 cases of sexual abuse are being investigated by an independent government commission. The investigation was set up in 2010 when reports of abuse in the church became a worldwide scandal.
