Councils urged to boost organ donation

Local councils should be more active in encouraging people to sign up as organ donors, the national transplant foundation said on Monday.

Councils are supposed to inform people about organ donation when they apply for a new passport but few actually do so, the foundation says in the Volkskrant.
The NTS would like to see the Netherlands follow the new British system which comes into effect next July. From then, everyone applying for a driving licence will be asked if they are willing to donate their organs.
The waiting time for a transplant in the Netherlands is currently around four years.
